RECENT PROGRESS IN NANOMECHANICAL MAPPING OF POLYMER ALLOYS, BLENDS, AND COMPOSITES
We have developed nanomechanical mapping system based on atomic force microscope (AFM), where we can reconstruct true surface image, Youngs modulus image and adhesive energy image of polymer alloys, blends, and composites at the same place in nanometer scale.1-3) The method can be applied to natural rubber (NR) under elongation 4-5) and many interesting results including direct observation of non-affine deformation have been obtained. The mechanical properties of NR reinforced by nanofillers such as carbon black (CB) and carbon nanotube (CNT) were also investigated and concluded that there obviously exists mechanical interfacial region at the boundary.6.7) As shown in Figure 1, the interface appears as the parts with different Youngs modulus from both matrix and filler.
