NANORHEOLOGY OF POLYMER CHAINS IN NANOPARTICLE DISPERSED COMPOSITES

The mixing of polymers and nanoparticles is opening pathways for engineering flexible composites that exhibit excellent electrical, optical or mechanical properties. During the past decades, great efforts have been done to establish cost-effective approaches for controlling the spatial distribution of the nanoparticles in the polymer hosts and to correlate the morphology of the mixtures with the macroscopic performance of the materials. Although the growing availability of nanoparticles of precise size and shape, and the development of instrumentation to probe small lengths scales, such as scanning force, laser scanning fluorescence, and electron microscopes, have spurred research aimed at probing the influence of particle size and shape on the properties of nanocomposites, little has been elucidated on how cooperative interactions between flexible chains and nanoscopic solids can lead to unexpected behavior, like the improved mechanical behavior of clay-reinforced nylon.
