PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF POLYURETHANE-COATED POLYAMIDE 6 FIBRES
Polyamide 6 (PA6) fibres were coated with polycarbonate-based thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs). TPUs were prepared from poly(hexamethylene carbonate) glycol(PHC),4,4-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) and 1,4-butane diol (BD) with aNCO/OH ratio, K =2.05 and 3.05. Tensile strength and elongation at break increased for all TPU-coated fibres. Annealed fibre sample showed a slight increase in strength and elongation due to increase in crystallinity but with the PL) coated ones, it was a sharp increase. Also, the thin urethane film delayed the growth of the micro-cracks which occurs on the fibre in tension. INTRODUCTION Polyamide 6 fibers are widely used in our life, for example, textiles, engineering applications and marine applications. High melting point, high crystallinity, good resistance to hydrocarbons, high strength, the ease of fabrication and processing can be given as superior properties of PA 6. On the contrary, TPUs possess wide applications, as coatings, adhesives, sealants, foams and so on. In this study, the PA 6 fibers were coated with a polycarbonate-based polyurethane and their structure and properties were investigated.
