CRYSTALLIZATION OF SYNDIOTACTIC POLYSTYRENE IN CYLINDRICAL NANOPORES

Polymer nanotubes and nanorods are of scientifiC and technological interest because they have potential applications in many areas, such as microelectronics, optical, mechanical, and biomedical devices.Syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) is a semicrystalline polymer with good thermal and chemical stability due to the high stereoreguiarity of the polymer chains2 and exhibited complex polymorphic structures (with four stable crystalline forms: α, β, γ and δ).3 In this work, sPS nanorods of 32 nm diameter were prepared by infiltrating porous anodic alumina oxide templates with polymer melt, and the crystallinity and orientation of sPS crystals in the nanorods obtained under different conditions were studied by FTIR spectroscopy. For sPS crystallized from melt at 255 ℃ for 2 h and cooled to room temperature slowly (Sample A), a dramatic difference in the crystalline phase between the nanorods and the bulk was found. Only β crystallinity was found in the bulk, while in the nanorods both a and p crystals were present, and the degree of β crystallinity was much less than that in the bulk. However, for sPS crystallized from molten state at 255 ℃ for 2 h and then quenched in ice water (Sample B), only β form crystals were found in the nanorods just as that in the bulk, and the degree of crystallinity was significantly lower than that in the bulk, same as that observed for nanorods of larger diameters.4 The quenched sample (Sample B) was annealed at 255 ℃ for 2 h again and cooled to room temperature slowly (Sample O, additional a phase appeared, resulting in coexistence of a and P forms in the nanorods.
