STRUCTURAL TRANSFORMATION OF AGGREGATES OF BOTH CHITOSAN AND POLY (SODIUM STYRENESULFONATE) IN WATER
For polyelectrolytes solutions, it is well known that at a certain high concentration of small ions, microphase or even macroscopic phase separation, which is generally called as salting-out occurs 1. It is reasonable for us to select monovalent salt to induce the phase separation, which offers a pure thermodynamic consideration of the driving force, electrostatic and normal free energy without long-range Coulomb potential and short-range electrostatic interaction effect. The single chain and microclusters are in thermodynamic nonequilibrium state, and will land to the domain to form larger fractals. We focus on the structural transformation of aggregates of both Chitosan (with low flexibility) and NaPSS (with high flexibility, monodispersed) in aqueous solutions after the addition of high salt by dynamic laser light scattering in this work and analyze the aggregation mechanism due to characteristics of chains.
