CRYSTALLIZATION AND THERMAL PROPERTIES OF PLLA COMB POLYMER

Poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) is a biodegradable and biocompatible thermoplastic polymer. However, PLLA suffers from the difficulty of controlled degradation based on its high crystallinity and induction of material defects, so it is necessary to modify the physical properties of the polymer. Comb polymers, also called macromolecular brushes, are receiving more and more attention.2 In this research, we focused on the the crystalline structures isothermal crystallization and melting behavior of PLLA comb polymer on PHEMA backbone. Poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) comb polymer on poly(2hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) backbone was prepared by a combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and ring-opening polymerization (ROP) (Figure 1). By1 HNMR, the average polymerization degrees of PHEMA backbone and PLLA brushes were determined to be 60 and 215, respectively. The GPC result showed that the molecular weight (Mn) of the polymer is about 79690 with a polydispersity of 1.68.
