MDI INDUCED CRYSTALLIZATION OF THERMOPLASTIC POLYURETHANE VIA MELT COMPOUNDING
Thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) are linear block copolymers, composed of multiple hard segments and soft segments. The structure and morphology of the hard segment domain in segmented polyurethanes has been the hot topic of considerable research in the past, while spherulitic superstructure has been occasionally observed for the crystalline hard segment materials 1-3. It is generally believed 4 that the hard segments need high level of mobility present either during solution casting, due to the solvent, or during polymerization, due to the monomer molecules, in order to form spherulites. Xu 5 found that TPU can form spherulites upon quenching the melt to an annealing temperature. In the present work, a very small amount of 4, 4-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) was introduced during melt compounding to investigate the morphology change of TPU.
