FRICTION-LUBRICATION TRANSITION OF HYDROGEL

It has been revealed that the frictional coefficient of hydrogels changes over a wide range and exhibits very low values under certain conditions (10-3-10-4), which are significantly lower than that of rubbers or other solid materials 1,2. The recent invention of mechanically tough hydrogels 35 has changed the stereotype of weak and brittle synthetic hydrogels. Tough hydrogels with a low surface friction have demonstrated the high potential of these materials to be used in engineering and bioindustries such as low-friction artificial cartilages and industry bearings6-7.
