THE INTERFACIAL COMPATIBILIZATION EFFECT OF THERMOSET OLIGOMER ON POLYAMIDE 6 / POLY(METHYL METHACRYLATE)

Recently, reactive compatibilization has become significant commercial interest. It is based on copolymers in-situ generated by chemical reaction of end- functionalized chains at polymer/polymer melt interfaces during the blend preparation. These insitu formed copolymers, act as compatibilizer, tend to reduce the interfacial tension, enhance interfacial adhesion and therefore to improve the final mechanical properties of polymer blends. But, the in-situ formed compatibilizer would sometimes escape from the interface1-2. In this paper, we prepared bilayers of PA6/PMMA with epoxy as the interfacial agent to show a new method of reactive compatibilization. AFM and ATR-FTIR illuminated that the interface of PA6 and PMMA was reinforced by epoxy through strong physical/chemical intermolecular interactions.
