A THERMODYNAMIC ANALYSIS FOR DETERMINING CONTACT ANGLE AND CONTACT ANGLE HYSTERESIS

Contact Angle (CA) and CA hysteresis (CAH) are significant to characterize wettable property of a surface. In this study, a free energy thermodynamiC approach is used to analysis the wettable behavior of a droplet on microtextured superhydrophobic surface, regularly microsphere and micropillar geometric distribution mode. We demonstrate that the predicted the equilibrium contact angle and CAH are consistent with the calculations of Wenzels and Cassies theories and also experimental results. Apparently, the thermodynamic approach based on the first principle and free energy minimization presented simplifies and make clear some confusion in the wettable behavior. Moreover, it provides potential guiding for designing stable superhydrophobic surfaces.
