INHOMOGENEITIES OF POLYSTYRENE GELS PREPARED FROM SEMIDILUTE SOLUTIONS

Polymer gels are roughly classified into chemical gels and physical ones, depending on whether the cross-linking is made of covalent bonds or physical interaction, such as hydrogen bonds, electrostatic interaction, and hydrophobic association. Most of chemical gels are prepared by conventional radical copolymerization of monomers and cross-linking agents and the resultant gel is a kind of assembly of finite microgel clusters tied together.1 Polymer gels prepared by free radical copolymerizing process always formed microgels at lower monomer concentration, e.g.<20% for PS,2 and large inhomogeneities are formed in the gels for that clusters are always formed during the pregel process. Cross-linking of polystyrene chains in solution results in the formation of an expanded highly swollen one-phase gel.3
