WEAK HYDROGEN BONDINGS IN BIODEGRADABLE POLYMERS STUDIED BY INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY AND X-RAY DIFFRACTION
We have investigated crystal structure and CH... O=C hydrogen bonding (weak hydrogen bonding) by using infrared (IR) spectroscopy and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) for poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB), poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) P(HBco-HHx) (HHx=2.5, 3.4, 10.5, and 12 mol %), and poly (3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHV) (Fig.l). PHB has a CH3 group while PHV has a C2H5 group as a side chain. On the other hand, the HHx has a C3H7 group and P(HB-coHHx) could not make a crystalline form.
