INTEGRATION OF BIO-MOLECULAR MOTORS -TOWARD AN ATP FUELED GEL ACTUATOR

We have reported that polymer-actin complexes as large as 10-50 μm with filamentous, branched, stranded, and ring shapes are obtained when fluorescent phalloidin-labeled Factin is mixed with synthetic polymers carrying positive charges such as poly-L-Iysine(p-Lys), and x, y-ionene bromide polymers (x=3 or 6; y=3, 4, 6, 10 or 12). The complex formation occurs cooperatively at some critical polymer concentration, regardless of the chemical structure, while the morphological feature of the complexes are substantially influenced by the chemical structure of the polymer. The p-Lys-actin complex grows preferentially along the F-actin filament axis even above the critical concentration. The 3,3-ionene-actin complex shows completely homogeneous filament below the critical concentration but forms bundles at a higher concentration. Occasionally ring-shaped complexes can be observed in the 6,6-ionene actin complex.
