EFFECTS OF CHAIN CONFORMATION AND ENTANGLEMENT ON THE ELECTROSPINNING OF PURE ALGINATE

It was reported the fabrication of SA nanofibers by electrospinning is still a challenge1. In view of the rigid and extended chain mainly caused by hydrogen bondings2, increasing the flexibility and entanglements of SA chains may be essential in improving the electrospinnability. In this study, pure SA nanofibers were fabricated successfully by introducing a strong polar cosolvent, glycerol, into the SA aqueous solutions. As Figure 1 shown, uniform fibers without beads could be produced with an average fiber diameter of about 200 nm when the volume ratio of glycerol to water was increase to 2 at a fixed specific concentration of 2 w/v %.
