POLYURETHANE-BASED NANOCOMPOSITES WITH POSS: PREPARATION AND STRUCTURAL CHARACTERIZATION
In the area of inorganic-organic materials polyhedral oligosilsesquoxanes (POSS) are considered as important building blocks that are classified as 0-D nanofillers with sizes of 1-3 nm and can be thought of as the smallest particles of silica possible. However, unlike silica, the wide variety of functional moieties that can be affixed to silicon make POSS molecules attractive candidates for a wide range of application 1. POSS are thus unique nanobuilding blocks that can be used to create a wide variety of hybrid materials, where precise control of nanostructures and properties is required 2. POSS nanohybrid polymer are materials that contain nanoscale, silicate cagelike segments directly bound to the polymer chains 3. Reactive oligosilsesquioxanes can be incorporated into traditional polymers via copolymerization, grafting and blending processes 4,5. Three primary POSS-polymer architectures (bead, pendant, or cross-linked) are available for use in thermoset systems or in copolymers.
