COMPLEXITY IN THREE-COMPONENT POLYMERS -LINEAR MOLECULES VS ABC STARS
Self-assembled structures for two kinds of terpolymer systems with high complexity are compared focusing on the difference in chain connectivity. The first ones are ISP linear terpolymers, where I, S and P denote polyisoprene, polystyrene and poly(2-vinylpyridine), respectively. A new tricontinuous periodic structure was observed for the system with composition distribution, in addition to the tricontinuous Gyriod structure for the monodisperse system. The second ones are I-S-P star-branched terpolymers which tend to give cylinder-based structures. It has been confirmed that their cross sections reveal periodic two dimensional tilings, most of which were characterized as the Archimedean tilings. Furthermore, we have found an aperiodic quasicrystalline tiling pattern with dodecagonal symmetry.
