THERMAL SENSITIVE FLUORESCENT HYPERBRANCHED POLYMER WITHOUT ANY FLUOROPHORES

In recent years, many dendritic macromolecules which respond to light, pH, ionic strength or temperature, have been considered as smart polymers because the potential application for triggered release of encapsulated activates via different chemical stimuli.1-4 However, a dendritic polymer with both light-sensitive and thermal-sensitive properties has not been reported before. A thermallight dual response hyperbranched polymer Polyethylenimine-grafted-cyclohexane carboxylic acid (PEI-CCA) was designed and synthesized by introducing hydrophobic cyclohexyl units to the terminals of hyperbranched polyethylenimine (PEI) as presented in scheme 1. Proper amounts of hydrophobic cyclohexyl units endue PEI-CCA with a hydrophobic-hydrophilic balance which leads to the thermo sensitive property. And the peripheral modifier of PEI endues the resultant hyperbranched polymer strong fluorescence as shown in Figure 1. Both temperature response and fluorescence response can be controlled by adjusting the ratio of cyclohexyl groups.
