DESIGN OF 30M SMALL ANGLE NEUTRON SCATTERING INSTRUMENT AND NEUTRON REFLECTOMETER
Small angle neutron scattering and neutron reflectometry are well-established techniques for the microstructural investigation in the nanoscale size range, especially the characterization studies in organic materials, e.g., polymer, copolymer, complex fluids, and biology 1. The great advantage of neutron scattering methods derives from the obviously different scattering lengths of hydrogen (-0.3741×1012cm) and deuterium (0.6674×10-12cm) 2. Elastic neutron scattering instruments, the 30m small angle neutron scattering instrument (SANS) and the neutron refiectometer (NR) have being developed under the participating research team agreement, involving the Institute of Chemistry, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the China Institute of Atomic Energy. The 30m SANS instrument is installed at the end of CNGD guide (cross section 50mm×200mm) in the China Advanced Research Reactor (CARR) guide hall, using the top 50mm2 beam of CNGD guide, and the NR is placed at the junction of curved guide and straight guide consisting of CNGD guide in the CARR, using the lowest 50mm2 beam of CNGD guide, as shown in Fig. 1. The 30m sANS and NR being designed are the first neutron instruments of their kinds in China dedicated to the structural characterization of thin films and multilayers of interest.
