CONCRETE SUSTAINABILITY AND THE ROLE OF FIBRE REINFORCEMENT
Cement manufacture results in emission of significant amount of CO2. One very important strategy for reducing this emission is to construct buildings with durable concrete that does not need costly maintenance or even demolition and reconstruction in a relatively short period. Thus, durability of concrete is necessary for sustainability. Another strategy is to be creative in realizing the potentials of new materials and techniques that are utilized in the industry and in research. The prospect of including alternative and supplementary materials in concrete, need to be extensively studied in relation with the developments in fibre reinforcement and the innovation that is taking place in concrete composites. The developments in the science of fibre reinforced concrete are expected to have far reaching effects on the durability and hence the sustainability of structural concrete.
