EFFECT OF SLAG ON PORE SIZE DISTRIBUTION OF CEMENT BASED PASTE SUBJECTED TO DIFFERENT CURING REGIMES
Using industrial by-products in construction applications has a positive effect on the sustainability of our environment as it reduces the amounts of virgin material and the amount of materials sent to landfill. Slag may be considered as a waste product. The porosity of concrete containing slag has been reported in a previous investigation. In this paper, the influence of slag on the porosity and pore size distribution of cement paste is considered. Paste specimens, in the form of cubes of 100mm in size, were subjected to normal and elevated temperature curing at different levels of relative humidity. Samples were taken from different locations within the specimens. When subjected to some initial moist curing, the results show that the inclusion of slag is beneficial. The pore size distribution of paste varies, depending upon the location within a cube relative to the casting position. Substantial difference in intruded pore size distribution exists between samples taken from various locations within the paste specimens.
