THE EFFECT OF MONOLITHIC SLABS ON THE BEHAVIOR OF BEAMS IN RC FRAME

In Chinese structure design codes, the Strong Column Weak Beam philosophy is recommended, which means the plastic hinges should be observed in beam component first to dissipate earthquake energy. However, the strength of main beams is highly improved by slabs which are monolithically connected to the beams in reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures. This is because the cast-in-place frame structures designed according to this designing principle actually presented as a form of Strong Beam Weak Column in real earthquake disasters. As comparison, for frame structures without slabs, the plastic hinge can firstly developed in beams and then in columns, which can achieve good ductility and energy dissipation. In order to verify the contribution of the slabs, a finite element program ABAQUS is used to investigate the behavior of RC frame structures with and without floor system, respectively. The developing sequences of the plastic hinges, the lateral load-stress curves and the curvature of main beams are compared. Then the explanations for the differences between the two kinds of frame are given. Moreover, the slab reinforcement stress development of the frame with slab is studied. The effective flange width which acts as a tension flange for the longitudinal beam is advised to be used to contain the slab contribution. Furthermore, a recommendation is put forward that the torsional stiffness of transverse beams and lateral interstory drift should be in consideration in the decision of effective flange width.
