INFLUENCE OF COMPLEX EDGE STIFFENERS ON ELASTIC BUCKLING OF LIPPED CHANNEL COLUMNS
Complex edge stiffeners are formed by turning the free edge of an open section multiple times inwards or outwards to the flange, as opposed to simple edge stiffeners which employ a single fold. In this paper, we focused on two types of inward complex edge stiffeners. One is the inward angled stiffener; the other is the inward hooked stiffener. The elastic local, distortional and overall buckling behavior of cold-formed thin-walled steel channels with complex edge stiffeners under axial compression were studied by finite strip software CUFSM. Based on the results of parametric study, comparisons of the channels with complex edge stiffeners with channels with simple edge stiffeners about the elastic buckling stress (especially for distortional buckling stress) were also presented in this paper. It is shown that complex edge stiffeners can provide improved elastic distortional buckling stress performance over simple edge stiffeners under the same conditions, but such complex edge stiffeners have little impact on local and overall buckling stress of the member. With the flange width to the web height ratio increased, the elastic distortional buckling stress of channels with complex edge stiffeners to channels with simple edge stiffeners is enhanced at the same time. The different effect between the two types of inward complex edge stiffeners on the elastic distortional buckling stress was also gained from the study.
