INVESTIGATION ON IMPROVEMENT METHODS OF STRUCTURAL STYLE FOR BEAM STRING STRUCTURES
Beam string structure (BSS) is a reasonable hybrid one composed of arch, strut and string, which has been widely used in long-span spatial structures in recent years. Based on the initial definition of beam string structure, several improved structural styles for one-way BSS have been firstly investigated in this paper, and the influences of latticed arch at both ends subjected to eccentric force as well as the influences of the oblique rod added to one-way BSS are further analyzed too. Then, by comparing with one-way BSS, some defects such as non-uniform distribution of stiffness and insufficient use of the lower cable-strut system are also pointed out herein, and the analytical results show that the deficient height of the surrounding areas for cross-ways BSS with parabolic layout of cables is the main reason. Accordingly, it is suggested that fewer single BSS and broken layout of cables should be chosen as priority when the structural span for cross-ways BSS is given. The conclusions obtained may be useful to the designers in similar projects.
