Lessons from Benchmarking Studies of Best Practice Maintenance Organisations
The Industrial Maintenance Roundtable (IMRt) has carried out more than 130 comprehensive benchmarking studies of industrial maintenance. The studies revealed that while there are pockets of excellence, many organisations are substantially behind world best practice in maintenance management. Often poor performance is due to reactive styles of maintenance management. The benchmarking studies highlight the need for a transition from reactive to more sophisticated management styles in order to achieve maintenance excellence. A range of tools (including benchmarking) have been used by overseas organisations to assist in this transition and SIRF has been able to adapt, and further develop a number of these. The application of these tools has provided a further insight into maintenance management systems.
