Effect of Moisture Transfer on Hygrothermal Performance and Conduction Loads of Multilayer Wall of South China

In south China, the emphasis on more energy-efficient building constructions has been at the expense of increasing moisture accumulation problems, including poor indoor air quality and structural damage. In addition, the presence of moisture accumulation has a significant effect on the thermal conductivity of the building materials and air-conditioning loads. One purpose of this paper is to evaluate the effect of moisture transfer on thermal performance of multilayer wall. Two models were established. The 1-D transient hygrothermal model for multilayer wall was established by using air humidity ratio and temperature as the driving potentials which is based on the heat and moisture transfer through porous media. Regard the well-known conduction equation as sub-model which neglects the moisture effect. Results calculated by hygrothermal model are compared with the results calculated by the sub-model. Through this comparison the effect of moisture transfer on hygrothermal performance of multilayer wall is obtained. The other purpose is to evaluate the effect of moisture transfer on conduction loads. By analyzing the ratio of latent load to total conduction loads at different time, the effect of moisture transfer on conduction loads is achieved. Finally, take Changsha region as an example, the effect of moisture transfer on thermal performance and conduction loads of multilayer wall of south China are evaluated. The results indicated that in south China like Changsha, for hygroscopic walls, latent heat plays an important role on the wall energy balance. That omitting moisture transfer will cause large errors for not adding the latent to the sensible one. The well-known conduction equation cant predict the temperature distribution accurately.
