A Case Study on the Influence of the Site Selection on the Natural Ventilation in a Chinese Traditional Folk House

Buildings originated from the need for human beings to protect themselves from the adverse impacts of climate. The site selection of the Chinese traditional folk house was profoundly influenced by the Feng Shui. Natural ventilation and topography feature are two important considerations in Feng Shui theory. Because of the various and complicated influence factors and the study methods limitation, the influence of topography features on natural ventilation was ignored in the past. It is a valuable work to study the relationship between the topography features and natural ventilation of the traditional folk house for improving the natural ventilation design of the modern residential building. The site selection of Zhangguying village was influenced by Feng Shui obviously. So, the main building of Dangdamen building complex, which belongs to Zhangguying village, was selected to be simulated. Through the simplifying, the regional 3D-model (including the northern hill and the Dangdamen building complex) and building 3D-model were established by AutoCAD. 4 cases are prepared to be simulated by the FLUENT software with different weather conditions and topography. The meshes of the geometric model in all eases are generated based on the GAMBIT software. The outside boundary conditions are determined by the equations of ASHRAE, Chinese and Japanese national standards, literatures, hypotheses and so on. The simulation results show: The hill will reduce the absolute values of the wind pressure at the windward and leeside of the building; The effect of encouraging the natural ventilation of the patio with the hill is larger than that of the patio without the hill. The same situation is repeated in the comparison of the patio effect between summer and winter; The wind speed around the building was reduced by the hill as a resistance. The influence degree of the hill in summer and winter are quite different because of different wind direction. Three conclusions can be drawn with the results and analysis: Firstly, the hill will disturb the natural ventilation both in summer and in winter;Secondly, the patio is a useful design to improve the natural ventilation in summer with this kind of site selection (with the hill to the north); Thirdly, the hill can maximize the resistance on the natural ventilation in winter, and minimize that in summer at the same time. The results show, that this kind of site selection (with the hill to the north) is a suitable way to settle the conflict of natural ventilation requirements between in summer and in winter under the subtropic climate.
