Measurement and Field Survey of Indoor Thermal Comfort in Rural Housing of Northern China in Winter

This paper introduces a field measurement of indoor thermal environment taken in rural housing of suburban Beijing from December 2008 to March 2009. During the survey, the indoor environment parameters such as air temperature, mean radiant temperature (MRT), airflow velocity and relative humidity were measured. The occupants of these surveyed houes were required to answer questionnaires about their thermal sensation, thermal comfort, and their daily activities, and the clothing conditions were recorded as well. The result shows that occupants thought their indoor environment was comfortable and the TSV was higher than PMV. The thermal neutral temperature of rural housing was 18.4~C, and the lower limit of acceptable temperature zone can be extended to 10.9~C. The comfortable indoor temperature was affected strongly by occupants clothing and lifestyle. Its not reasonable to keep high temperature difference between indoor and outdoor for rural housing occupants became it will cause uncomfortableness and inconvenience for their daily life. Therefore, the indoor temperature standard of space heating for rural homing can not be simply duplicated from that for urban housing. Compared with occupants in rural Beijing, it is found that the occupants in rural Hunan feel colder at the same operative temperature because of the higher relative humidity in Hunan than that in Beijing.
