Thermodynamic Comparative Analysis of Heat Pump Cycles

The expansion process of refrigerant flow through throttling devices represents an obvious thermodynamic loss that can be mitigated by the application of different solutions, such as intracycle evaporative cooling, economizer and ejector cycles or work producing expansion devices. The present paper concentrates on studying the latter, specifically applied for the refrigeration cycles. A basic thermodynamic model was developed to simulate a vapor compression cycle for heat pump cycles using expanders. This study concentrated in the subcritical vapor compression R134a cycle with an expander and a thermostatic expansion valve placed downstream the expander. The results indicate that, even the gains on the COP are reasonable in the vapor compression cycles, at least for large expander efficiencies, but the cycle performance with an expander is much better than the cycle performance with a thermostatic expansion valve if the efficiency of the expander is up to a certain value.
