Development of a High Efficient Ground Source Heat Pump
The objective of the present paper is to describe the development of a high efficient ground source heat pump (GSHP). The ground source heat pump was developed under the European project Ground Coupled Heat Pumps Of High Technology -Groundhit, project number 503063, supported by the Sixth Framework Programme, of The European Commission. One of the objectives of the Groundhit project was to development a high efficient ground source heat pump, increasing in about the 10% -20% higher than the existent GSHP available in the market. The target proposed in the project it was reach at least 5.5 of COP in heating mode. The development was divided in different phases, design phase, pre-prototype development and testing, prototype development and testing in real conditions. During the f~t phase were mainly investigate the best heat pump configuration and the best refrigerant fluid. It was decided to use R410a in a one stage cycle. It was done also an especial attention in the selection of the more adequate compressor in the market, scroll compressor, and in the development of the heat exchanger for the evaporator and condenser, where it were used special brazed heat exchangers, developed by CIAT. During the second phase it was developed the pre-prototype based in the previous decisions done during the design phase. The pre-prototype was testing in the CIAT laboratory. In the third part of the project it was developed the prototype, based in the work developed during the laboratory phase. The objective is was to test the prototype in a commercial configuration, under real conditions. It were installed two GSHP (15 kWheating and 12 kWcooling) in Polytechnic Institute of Setubal, coupled to five boreholes with 80 m deep each. These two GSHP is responsible for heating and cooling seven office rooms ant two lessons rooms. In three boreholes were installed double-U borehole heat exchangers (BHE) and in the last two it were installed coaxial BHE. The COP reach by pre-prototype in laboratory was 5.2 under the nominal conditions established in the Groundhit project, and 6.2 under the Eurovent nominal conditions. In real conditions the performance of the prototype was monitoring allowing conclude that the COP in real conditions can reached values between 5.5 and 6, in heating mode. The main conclusion of the project it was the development and production of a prototype ready for the high efficiency market with excellent energy performance with 10-20% higher COP than other heat pumps.
