Effect of Indoor Thermal Environment in Two Typical Roof Buildings in the Hot Summer Warm Winter Zone

Thermal performance of roofs have great effect on the indoor thermal environment of top floor room. This paper studied the thermal performance between the traditional roof with ventilation (VR) and the new roof insulated by XPS (IR) in residential buildings in the hot summer and warm winter zone. In order to illustrate their effects on indoor thermal environment quality (IEQ), an experiment was conducted under five different conditions according to the manners of the dwellings, including no ventilation, intermittent ventilation, continuous ventilation without air conditioning, intermittent air conditioning and continuous air conditioning. Results obtained showed that IR was better than VR in aspect of thermal resistance, but worse in the heat dissipation during the night. It was more important for the roof to dissipate heat at night in the hot summer and warm winter zone because the main occupied time was night for residential buildings. So VR was suitable to be used in this area. Though VR or IR was used, the indoor thermal environment still couldnt meet the requirements of occupants. Comprehensive means were needed to improve the thermal performance of the roof.
