Thermal Study of a School Building in Summer Conditions
Unlike air-conditioned buildings such as offices, shopping centers and theaters, most school buildings in China are naturally ventilated. Due to this characteristic, during summer air temperature is not low; nevertheless, one can experience thermally uncomfortable values. This situation influences students learning experience and teachers teaching experience. Therefore, it is important to investigate the thermal conditions of school buildings in summer conditions. In this study it was to investigate thermal conditions and air quality in a school building. Also, it was to explore the factors which affect thermal comfort and air quality levels for occupants with low energy consumption levels. A field study was conducted to investigate the thermal comfort conditions of a school building under study. The study aimed to provide an understanding of the thermal comfort conditions and air quality of the school building and to identify the factors that affected the thermal comfort and air quality of the users. Two different sizes of classrooms were conducted in the field study. The field study covered both the objective measurements and the subjective evaluations, which were conducted simultaneously. The survey was conducted on the students sitting in the classroom. Based on the field study, it was found that the CO2 concentration in two types classrooms was different due to the different size of the classroom and occupant density. It was also found that the CO2 concentration near windows was lower that other areas in the classroom. Based on the evaluation of thermal perception for two type classrooms, it was found that the percentage of people who were satisfied with the large room was higher than that with the small room. It can be concluded that occupant density can affect environmental factors such as air temperature and peoples perception evaluations, such as air temperature and the CO2 concentration.
