A Survey of Indoor Air Quality in New Residences In North-East Area,Japan
Outbreaks of Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) first gained attention in the energy-efficient buildings in the 1970s in the USA. A similar syndrome has been reported with frequency in airtight new houses in Japan, that is, Sick House Syndrome (SHS). We measured the indoor air quality in detached houses, and also did a questionnaire survey about people in the families to know the condition in the house and health condition of the families. Popular indoor ventilation methods in the houses were to open the window and to use ventilation device in each room. Ventilation devices were located mainly in the kitchen and bathroom. On the contrary there are few in bedrooms and study rooms. Dew developed in many houses. The dew at window was near 70%. Fungus developed in bath rooms in many houses. The floor surfaces in living rooms were mainly wood floor. The number of mites was less at wood floor compared to carpet. On the results of fungus in air, Cladosprium and Aspergillus were frequent and high. Mean concentration of Carbon dioxide (CO2) and house dust were rather high. The main features of SHS are air contamination in a house and the ventilation system to remove it. Common sources of these contaminations include renovation and remodeling material such as paints, insulation material, and volatile organic compounds (VOC) such as formaldehyde and so on. Ventilation device must be set up at new houses according to the hygienic law of Japanese building from 2003. Setting of ventilation device was increasing at new houses. Measurements of air contamination in residences need to be followed up.
