Study of Ozone Emission and IAQ in Computer Laboratory
This paper presents findings of study on ozone (03) gas emission and Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) in selected computer laboratories and simulated case in a Walk-in Stability Chamber (WiSC) at University of Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM). Measurement of 03 and IAQ parameters were carded out in two (2) computer laboratories, one consisting of 33 units of computers of age 3 years, designated as old laboratory and the other consisting of 29 units of age 1 year, designated as new laboratory. Measurements were also conducted of a simulated case in the WiSC which housed both the new and old computers. Each PC was equipped with CRT monitor. The environmental parameters measurements include the concentration of 03 gas, air temperature, carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2) gases, air velocity, ventilation rate and lighting. Questionnaires had been distributed to gauge the occupants perception of well being and comfort, and also to evaluate the IAQ conditions and reported Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) symptoms inside both the laboratories and WiSC. Measurement was made while they were performing text typing and internet surfing. The concentration of 03 gas was measured using Aeroqual Series 500, while CO and CO2 gases were using IAQ meter. Meanwhile, the ventilation rate measurement was measured using the Automated Tracer Gas and lighting by Light Meter. Experimental data were compared with standards such as the ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2007 and U.S EPA Standard. The results of O3 concentration were between 0.015 ppm to 0.016 ppm, and 0.013 ppm in both the laboratories and WiSC respectively. Meanwhile the concentrations for CO gas were between 14.61 ppm to 15.02 ppm, and 15.01 ppm inside the WiSC. The concentration of CO2 were between 300 ppm to 725 ppm, and 558 ppm inside the WiSC. The air temperature, air velocity and lighting level were between 23 to 29~C, 0.13 rn/s to 0.15 m/s, and 214 Lux to 466 Lux respectively. The result of the 03 gas concentration was within the US EPA limit and for other parameters such as air temperature, CO and CO2 gases, air velocity and lighting were with-in the ranges as prescribed by the ASHRAE Standard.
