The Effect of Regional Difference on IESD-Fiala Model

Increased concem about energy consumption and the simultaneous need for an acceptable thermal environment makes it necessary to predict occupants thermal sensations in an air-conditioned environment. Many thermal comfort models have been developed for this purpose; however, there are still some problems with them. In Fangers thermal comfortable theory, regional difference contains racial difference and climate difference is considered to have very little effect on peoples thermal sensation under thermal neutrality conditions. It is also neglected in mathematical models where all physiological parameters are defined in one type. The purpose of this study is to find out whether the effect of regional difference should be considered in IESD-Fiala models. IESD-Fiala model is considered as a reliable mathematical model and used here to simulate volunteers from Asia and Europe. Comparing simulated results with measured ones, measured data of European agree with simulated data, but Asians measured data are not. There are distinct difference in mean skin temperature between Asians measured data and simulated data, which may be caused by climate or race. Different climate can be modified by an adaptive model with expectancy factory, and also can be combined with different race to require changes of physiological parameters in thermal comfort models. After analyzing data from simulation and experiment measurement, new physiological indexes or relationship between different regions will be developed to ensure that models can be applied suitably for all regions.
