Simulation of Building Environment in a Residential District

To provide energy saving HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) systems for a quiet, comfortable and healthy living environment, architects should take into account some influential factors in design, such as wind speed outdoor, ambient temperature, natural ventilation and the seasonal changes. A residential district consisting of 35 high-rise buildings with a southern exposure in Wuhan city has been simulated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software in this paper. Both of the velocity distributions of wind between the residential buildings and indoor natural ventilation in summer are simulated. Modeling strategy works as follows: at first, 2dimensional (2-D) models of this residential district in a large computational domain with coarse grid; then, 3-dimensional (3-D) models of some typical buildings in the residential district with moderate grid; at last, models of typical rooms with refined grid. By considering the physical properties of air, wind speed, wind direction, ambient temperature and other seasonal factors, the field distributions of temperature and wind are simulated both in the residential district and typical rooms. Based on these results, further parameters such as the outdoor thermal comfort, indoor PPD, possibility of using ventilation and so on are determined. By changing the buildings shape, height and spacing, the models to optimize the design are rebuilt and calculated. Finally, according to the optimal results, buildings with a staggered arrangement in the wind direction are found causing less tunnel effect than those with an in-line arrangement. Furthermore, natural ventilation can be used in many rooms of the residential district.
