Indoor Thermal Environment, Ventilation and Health Symptoms in a Physics Laboratory

Indoor environmental quality (IEQ), included indoor air quality (IAQ), has become an important concern for many researchers today. IEQ in physics laboratory was connected with the health and productivity of university students. Air quality in physics laboratory was not only influenced by indoor environmental factors but also influenced by the activity of subjects in the room. An investigation was carried in Wuhan to study the state of indoor thermal environment in physics laboratory. This study was carried out from March to April. Indoor air temperature, humidity and some indoor air pollutants included PM2.5 (particulate matters with 2.5 aerodynamic diameters less than 2.5 um), carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2) were measured and subjects health symptoms vote were collected. The subjects perceived reaction to indoor environment were inquired when the concentration of these target air pollutants were measured. Moreover, the effects of indoor air temperature on the thermal comfort were also investigated. The indoor temperature was ranged from 12~C to 26.6~C and mean indoor relative humidity was 63%±10% during the survey. The I/O ratios of PM2.5 in physics laboratory would be less than 1 when the outdoor level of PM2.5 was higher than 0.035 mg/m3. The change of concentration of CO was small. The number of students, air tight of buildings, the opening of windows and doors, etc, had effect on the concentration of CO2 in physics laboratory. The preferred temperature (19.8~C) was higher than the comfortable temperature (15.2~C). The university studies in physics laboratory preferred slighter warm thermal environment. The proportion of dizziness, sleepy, nose stimulation and dry skin was 25.5%, 34.8%, 25.4% and 39.6%, respectively. The maximum value was no more than 40%. Most students thought the air quality in physics laboratory was acceptable but not favourable.
