Field and Laboratory Measurements on Dust Associated with Microbial Contamination in Centralized Air-Conditioning Systems

The objective of this study was field test and laboratory measurements to investigate the dust associated with microbial contamination (including bacteria and fungi) characteristics in an air conditioning system. The case study, the centralized air conditioning system at Shaanxi History Museum, has been carded out. It was found that dust weight were at the range of 2.76~22.30 g/m2, and microbiological concentration ranged from 1.14x104cfu/g to 10.86x 104cfu/g. The dominating genera of fungi in dust were Cladosporium spp.(winter=34.3% and summer=41.8%) and Penicillium spp.( winter=23.6% and summer=30.1%).The results showed that there was microorganism growth inside the ventilation ducts, especially fungi were found in the ventilation duct. It suggests that the HVAC-systems of the building should be improved the filter efficiency and installed the control and disinfection device to mitigate the microbiological pollution.
