The Influence of Occupants Uncertainty on the Airflow in an Atrium of a High Residential Building in Winter

A test model is built in this paper in a similarity scale of 1:25 which is based on the similarity principle and the prototype is a tenstorey high residential building with a structure of an atrium lies in the center. The flux of heat source is set to be invariableness and its locations and numbers are changed to represent the uncertainty of the occupants. The characteristics of airflow in the atrium in winter are studied and the influence of the occupants uncertainty is illustrated and as a result the theoretical basis for forecasted investigation of the indoor environment in high residential building is perfected. The temperature inspecting instrument and hot wire anemometer are both used to get the temperature and velocities. The graphs of relationship between the height of atrium and the temperature or the velocities are established for further analysis. The results indicate that due to the close of outside windows, the velocity in atrium is small. The thermal stratification in atrium in winter is obvious when occupants locate respectively in the low, middle and high level and the maximum speed and its locations are various according to the different layers where the occupants locate on. Besides, the temperature is much uniform and with a large wind speed when occupants are in interlaced distribution. The wind speed which is large will take away much more quantity of heat and then weaken the maximum temperature in atrium.
