Jet Main Region Specification Method in CFD Simulations for Room Air Movement Analysis

In a ventilated room, the supply air movement condition and type of diffuser are essential parameters affecting the air flow patterns in the room. This paper analyzed four air terminal device models (i.e., basic model, box method model, N point momentum model, jet main region specification model) in CFD simulation. In order to verify the result from CFD program, a full-scale experiment was done and their performances were compared in a case study. The test room had a modular structure based on a load-bearing steel construction with a module of 1.2m. Its size was 5.4x4.8x2.6m3. The walls surrounding the perimeter were made of insulated chipboard. One of the walls was single glazed up to a height of 2.4m. The floor was made of 0.6x0.6m2 chipboard tales raised 0.5m above a structural concrete slab. There were six fluorescent evenly distributed along the ceiling in order to provide overall light. The chamber, including the light fixtures and the door, was carefully sealed. The velocity and temperature field were measured by omni-directional thermo-anemometer system in the occupant area. It demonstrated that basic model and box model were not applicable to complicated air terminal device. At the occupant area, the relative errors between simulated and measured air velocity were less than 20% based either on N-point momentum model or jet main region specification model. Around the ATD zone, the relative error between the numerical and measured air velocity based on jet main region specification model was less than 15%.
