Ezperimental Verification of Pressure Drop for a New Fibrous Filter Media Model
To simulate the performance of fibrous air filter media, it is necessary to develop a reasonable media structure model for simulation of the gas flow through it. Recently a two dimensional (2-D) log-normal distributed fibrous filter media model with fibers randomly positioned was proposed. Based on the measurement, fibers were represented by circles having truncated log-normal diameter distributions. An open-source computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code named OpenFOAM was used to investigate the flow field characteristics (flow pattems and pressure drop) around a single cylinder and this new model. It was shown that OpenFOAM was suitable for simulating low Reynolds number flow. Comparisons between simulation and literature show the accuracy of Shaws analytical solution to Stokesparadox. Experiments were performed to prove the accuracy of Kuwabara model for prediction of the pressure drop of fibrous filter media.
