Technical and Economic Analysis of the Combined Heating System with a Coal-fired Basic Heat-source and Gas-fired Boilers as Peak Load Heat-sources

This paper applied the theory of dynamic technical economics to evaluate a combined heating system in northeastern China from the perspective of economic performance. This combined heating system consists of a coal-fired basic heat-source and several gas-fired boilers as peak load heat-sources, and these gas-fired boilers are installed in the heating substations. We conducted the technical and economic analysis considering initial investment of facilities, operation and maintenance (O&M) expenses, etc. Besides, the optimal basic heat load ratio β was also derived from the analysis. We also studied the factors, e.g. fuel price, boiler efficiency that influence the annual cost of the system according to the sensitivity analysis. The analysis results indicate that the optimal basic heat load ratio β in northeastern China should be between 0.85 and 0.95, under the present condition. Fuel price is the leading factor that has influence on the annual cost of the combined heating system. Furthermore, the ratio between gas expenses and coal expenses while gas-fired boilers and coal-fired basic boiler supply the identical heat production respectively can be considered to be the indicator index of the systems economic performance. And the smaller this indicator index is, the better the combined heating systems economic performance will be.
