Slow Crack Resistance of Polyethylene Pipe Material and A Novel Test Method
Studies have shown that slow crack growth (SCG) is the main cause for polyethylene pipe failure. The mechanism of slow crack growth was discussed in this paper. The development of high performance polyethylene pipe with superior SCG resistance has become more and more attractive and the new trend.Reliable and efficient test methods are important to study SCG performance of PE pipe. Specified surfactant and elevated temperature are usually used in traditional methods such as NPT, FNCT, PENT and Bent Strip test to accelerate the pipe crack. It has been noticed of the long test cycles, poor reproducibility, and as well high sensitivity to surfactant purity and sophisticated sample preparation procedure with these traditional methods. SABIC has studied to use strain hardening test to evaluate the performance of SCG resistance for polyethylene pipe. The result correlates well with the traditional test methods. The method can be performed on the standard tensile equipment. With the advantages of short test cycles and good result reproducibility, it is suitable for the purposes of rapid data accumulation in the early R&D stage and batch release verification for materials and pipes.
