Rapid Estimation of Earthquake Damage to Natech Prone Facilities
Industry and other facilities that deal with hazardous materials can cause Natechs under exposure to earthquakes. Such secondary incidents can endanger human safety especially in urban settings. The ELER software developed in the EU FP6 NERIES Project is used for the rapid estimation of earthquake damage to industry and critical facilities. For given earthquake source parameters and relevant inventory of industry and critical facilities, ELER software computes the structural damage using empirical and analytical tools. As an example, the earthquake losses that would be experienced by industry and critical facilities in Istanbul due to several earthquake scenarios are assessed based on the spatial distribution of critical facilities and empirical earthquake vulnerability relationships obtained from 1999 Kocaeli Earthquake in Turkey amended with world-wide data.
