The Risk of Wrecks or the Wreck of Risk ? The Greek Paradigm
This paper deals with the development and application of risk analysis regarding the importance and fate of shipwrecks in Greek waters. In general, in the past few decades the question of their environmental impact has arisen due to the large number of shipwrecks worldwide. An important fact is that sunken ships might contain certain amounts of oil and/or oil mixtures, as well as dangerous structural materials that can eventually escape into the sea. Moreover, such an analysis is especially useful for the extended archipelagos located mainly in the Aegean Sea that has a number of important yet complex features; geomorphology, weather conditions, economic activities etc.
