The Values and Safety Culture of Young Chinese Engineers

Lower accident rates are related to the management of organizational-level risk perception and the fostering of a safety culture. Our goal is to verify how young Chinese engineers associate individual and organizational values with issues of safety. A three-dimensional value-space was used to assess the role of values in the attitudes of those surveyed about workplace safety; also to evaluate organizational efficiency and inefficiency in a bipolar manner. A French sample was consulted for comparison to the Chinese group. An interview and group consultation was performed for qualitative validation. The results show that, despite some differences, Chinese values concerning safety and organizational efficiency are similar to French values in these domains. Noting these similarities, we discuss the prospect for improvements in safety results within Chinese organizational contexts.
