Application of Element-free Galerkin Method on the Steady-state and Transient Temperature Field Simulation for High Concrete Dams

Based on the element-free Galerkin method (EFGM), the basic equations for steady-state and transient thermal conductivity problems are deduced and the formation of relevant coefficient matrices and load vectors in discretization form are presented. FORTRAN programs are also developed to compute the two-dimensional static and transient heat transfer problems for high concrete dams, respectively. Some key factors such as the construction process and concrete heat generation are considered carefully for the transient temperature field simulation. To validate the method and the programs, several samples are simulated, such as a gravity dam and an arch dam under steady state, a single concrete block during surface temperature shock. In the end the program is applied to simulate an arch dam during construction period. Results show that the method works well and the results have a good accuracy compared with those based on FEM. In addition, for transient temperature field simulation, the results for EFGM model are much more accurate than those for the FEM model.
