Boundary Element Method for Fluid-Saturated Porous Media
In this paper, two new approaches are proposed to solve the linear problems of fluid-saturated porous media by using the boundary element method (BEM).The first approach is the superposition method, in which the whole problem is reduced to be a series of analogous sub-problems with only one fluid inclusion by using the principle of superposition. The second one is the overall method (the whole problem is computed directly without any superposition), in which a new method is proposed to compute the variation of the fluid inclusion by using the Arc BEM Elements. Both of the two approaches are based on the static fluid constitutive relationship and the relationship between the fluid volume variation and the point displacements on the boundary of the fluid inclusion. When combining them together, any point displacement on the contact boundary between the fluid inclusion and the solid matrix can be expressed explicitly by the fluid pressure and the other point displacements on that boundary. Consequently, the interaction between the fluid inclusion and the solid matrix is uncoupled, thus both fields of displacements and stresses in the fluid-saturated media can be solved finally. In order to illustrate the applications of the presented methods, one simple example is presented first to demonstrate their feasibility and another example of a plane strain problem is presented afterward to simulate the effective elastic properties of the porous media under different porosities. The numerical results demonstrate that, the superposition method is less valid and convenient than the overall method, which may be more promising in the numerical simulations of the fluid-saturated medias.
