Effect of Loading Induced Anisotropy on the Shear Behavior of Rough Interfaces
Surface roughness is known to significantly influence the stress-displacement behavior of contacting solids. Among the various consequences of surface roughness is the loading-path dependency of the interface behavior. In this short paper, we have investigated this loading-path dependency utilizing a micromechanical method. In the micromechanical method, the surface roughness is modeled using a statistical approach, in which we utilize distributions of asperity heights and asperity contact orientations. The micromechanical method is very versatile and allows us to model both the inherent anisotropy of the surface as well as the anisotropy induced by shear loading.
