Comparisons of Three Approaches for Global Topological Optimal Design (GTOD) of Discrete-sizing Trusses: GA, AGO and Lingo

Three approaches (genetic algorithm (GA), ant group optimization (AGO) algorithm and solving nonlinear programming by Lingo are proposed in the process of GTOD of discrete-sizing structures. A modified mathematical model of discrete-sizing trusses optimization is first detailed regarding some constraints including stress, stability, and displacement, under multiple loading conditions. An overview of such three approaches is then described. In GA, mixed coding schemes are presented to select the optimal truss structures shape in various conditions, and modified operators are assigned for a more relatively accurate result. In AGO, a modified algorithm with elitist ants, niche strategy and memory of multiple colonies is illustrated. In addition, GTOD of discrete-sizing trusses is simplified to problem of solving nonlinear programming by Lingo. Ultimately, in order to examine the practicability of the three approaches, and compare such three approaches (GA, AGO and Lingo), a well-studied truss examples are used to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness.
