Tunnel fire safety research in Europe
The increase in traffic volume and building of complex underground systems in Europe has put focus on the problems of fires in tunnels. Also the large fire accidents that have occurred have contributed to this increase in interest. The investment costs are increasing which makes the importance of fire safety engineering growing. Traditionally the fire safety design of tunnels is depending on expected traffic intensity and length of the tunnel. More advanced fire safety includes in addition risk analysis and assumed design fires in terms of heat release rate as a function of time. The choice of design fires has a great impact on the final design of a tunnel. Numerous pan European research projects have been performed in order to increase the understanding of the consequences and improvement of the technical safety solutions for tunnels. One result of these research efforts is the creation of the LSURF foundation by five major tunnel safety research organizations from five European countries. This pan European research effort has resulted in opportunities to apply new safety systems in tunnels. For example water mist systems for several large European infrastructure projects have been tested. The positive attitude for water based systems in tunnels is increasing. At the same time some accidents, such as the one in Eurotunnel between Great Britain and France show that the spalling problems with high quality concrete needs to be improved. New solutions, for example using polypropylene fibres, have been thoroughly investigated by SP and other research institutes in Europe. The problems of egress have also been focused on in these European research projects. New technical solutions and warning systems combined with layout of escape routes has made it easier for users to escape in case of fire. This paper gives an overview of recent and future research activities in Europe. It is based on our experience at SP and activities in many of the European projects and other international research organisations.
